A plant runs on the lowest of its four qualities — light, water, ground and temperature. If any one hits zero it loses health every tick and dies. Each quality counts as 100% once it reaches the crop's optimum (0.7–0.9). Every hardiness gene adds 0.05 to temperature quality, so the plant survives the cold longer. Light is cut by roofs and shade, and when it drops to zero ceiling lights take over.
